When the riding is done, it’s easy to overlook helmet care. Your jersey and pants go into the wash easy enough, but what about your moto helmet? As one of your most important pieces of protective equipment, it should be properly maintained. Follow these steps to keep your dirt bike helmet looking and smelling like new.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

These instructions are for removing the internals, cleaning interior and exterior, and reinstalling the internals. Every helmet is different, but the steps will be similar. Please consult your owner’s manual for installation of pads and helmet liner.

  1. Mix lukewarm water with a mild detergent to create a cleaning solution.
  2. If you have any electronic equipment (GoPro, comms system, etc.), now is the time to remove them.

EXTERIOR

  1. Exterior: Begin by removing the helmet visor. This step gives you a clear surface to clean. Also, removal is the perfect opportunity to inspect the visor and screws. Replace if needed.
  2. Soak a clean microfiber cloth in the cleaning solution and wring out slightly. Ideally, the cloth will be wet but not dripping.

  1. Gently wipe down the outside of the helmet to remove dirt and grime.
  2. For hard-to-reach areas - such as vents and gasket lining - dip a soft bristle toothbrush into the cleaning solution and brush areas to clean.

INTERNAL PADS

  1. Remove helmet internals: cheek pads and helmet liner.
  2. Carefully handwash each item in the cleaning solution. Massage the pads in the solution to work out sweat and odors.
  3. Gently rinse each item under running water to remove the cleaning solution.

  1. Squeeze each item to remove excess water and allow to air dry out of direct sun exposure. Tip: Clean your helmet the day before to allow adequate time to dry before your next ride.
  2. Once the helmet liner and pads are dry, reinstall.
  1. Reinstall helmet visor and adjust to your preference.
  2. Take in that new helmet smell & enjoy your next ride!
